Assignment

Preparing your essay for publication

Publication

Kids need to see that their work has value. One way to make sure this happens is to have them publish to an online site. Since the essay in question is not actual formal research, one option is to have them submit it to teenink.com. This site publishes examples of student work from around the world, including poetry, short stories, essays, and the like. Obviously, before submission, students should go over their work with their instructor one last time.

Convert your essay into a letter to city leaders

Covert to letter

Obviously, it would not be considered proper for students to send persuasive essays to membrs of a city council. Instead, they should learn to format their work as business letters. The resource below can help them to do so.

Assignment

Posting your multimedia presentation to social media and arranging for your final in-person presentation

Post multimedia

One of the main goals of this project is to educate others about climate change and the SDGs. The best way to reach as many people as possible is to post on social media. One safe way for students to do this is for them to post but set privacy permissions so that only their trusted contacts will see their multimedia presentation. If this is not an option because of parental objections or safety issues, explore having students present their product to elementary students.

In terms of inviting members of the community to a formal presentation, one way to do so is to use evite.com. Be sure to teach students what an appropriate template looks like and what content should be in the invitation. Obviously, it would be even more effective if students researched contact information for city councilmen and contacted them through their official email or called to invite them.

This may also be a good opportunity to practice speaking skills, discuss proper attire, and emphasize the formality of the event. Having presentations on campus may make students and parents feel more comfortable.

Big Idea:
What can I do to teach others about my SDG and help my community implement one of the SDGs?

Students will have three primary goals for this unit.

First, they will be working to research a chosen SDG and consider a scenario-based lesson. Second, they will need to determine how they will educate others in terms of their SDG, for most people know very little about the SDGs. Finally, they will be creating a multimedia presentation and persuasive letter meant to convince people to take action regarding their SDG. Be thinking about these three aspects of the project at all times.

Alternatively, students can

construct an explanation based on evidence for how the availability of natural resources, the occurrence of natural hazards, and changes in climate have influenced human activity OR

evaluate or refine a technological solution that reduces the impacts of human activities on natural systems.

Extension: Enter your multimedia project in the worldof8billion video contest.

Extension: Use the Five Thinking Hats Method when reading: Five Thinking Hats is a simple, effective parallel thinking process that helps people be more productive, focused, and mindfully involved.

You and your team members can learn how to separate thinking into six clear functions and roles. Each thinking role is identified with a colored symbolic “thinking hat.” By mentally wearing and switching “hats,” you can easily focus or redirect thoughts, the conversation, or the meeting.

Reflection

Reflection

Looking back on all that you did to reach this point, what do you think you learned that will always stick with you? Will it be facts about climate change? Will it be your experiences with collaboration? Will you become an advocate for implementation of your SDG? Turn to your partner and discuss.
