When one thinks of the impact of poverty on peoples' lives,

one may consider how it impacts their health, their access to resources, and even how it may impact generations of the same family. To get a better sense of why you may choose to approach a project and paper related to poverty, please watch the short video below.

Assignment

  • Your ultimate goals:

    • Create a multimedia presentation related to your SDG, one that can be posted on social media to help others learn about the issue. The focus can be on how your SDG impacts our campus or how it impacts your city.

    • Analyze a scenario and suggest possible solutions

    • Write a persuasive letter to members of the City Council- encourage them to take more action with regard to dealing with your choice of SDGs.

Before that, though, it is a good idea to shake off any rust and work on your reading, writing, and multimedia skills. We will start with the activity below.

What are your initial thoughts regarding your SDG around the world or in your city? Reflect on this without looking up any articles or statistics. What might you do to help combat this problem? In your daily reflection journal, respond to these questions in one complete paragraph. Be sure to include a strong topic sentence. Share out with your class. Teachers will note common observations. Then, you will revise your paragraph using the CER graphic organizer below. Post your response to the class Padlet.

Assignment

To better understand how poverty can impact people's lives, you will need to read about this issue. Before reading the related article, though, it is helpful to talk about what you already know with your peers. Use the anticipation guide below to help you organize your thoughts before reading. Your teacher will be circulating around the room to facilitate discussion and address any possible misunderstandings related to poverty. Post your completed anticipation guide to the class Padlet with your full name and the name of your campus.

Assignment

Annotation

Now that you have had opportunities to discuss what poverty means to you and find out what it means to your peers, it's time to see if the predictions you made in your anticipation guide were correct. In order to do so, please select the version of the related article below that you believe meets your reading needs. In other words, if you consider yourself a pretty good reader, you would choose Version A. If you consider yourself an average reader, you would choose Version B. If you know that you are still working to master certain reading skills, you would choose Version C.

Read your article once, making a few notes in the margin to help you remember what you read. Then, your teacher will guide you through a process that will help you to make connections between the text and your experiences, between the text and other texts, and between the text and society/current events (using the Annotate readings link). If you prefer to investigate one of the other SDGs, please refer to the Other Resources page for articles related to them. Post your annotated article to the class Padlet.

Writing Scripts for the content in your multimedia presentation

Scripts and storyboards

It would be wise to begin drafting a script or storyboard for the content of your multimedia presentation. You can update this periodically throughout the unit, but the more complete it is now clearer your vision will be for the multimedia presentation. One way to do this is to use a site like Celtix, a site dedicated to script writing. Another way to do this is to use a site like Canva and simply do a search for "storyboard". Create a script or storyboard for your multimedia presentation and post it to the class Padlet with your full name and the name of your campus.

Theplot.io

Theplot.io is a combination of storyboard creator and script creator. It is easy to use but only allows for a seven day free trial.

Use Celtix to help you create a script for your multimedia presentation. It's relatively easy to use.

Use Canva to create posters, slides, videos, etc. Much of this is drag-and-drop technology, so it is relatively easy to use.

Assignment

Before you leave for the day, take a few minutes to look at any of the multimedia resources below that may interest you. On your digital exit ticket, explain why you might want to use one tool for your multimedia presentation. Simply click on the image of the multimedia tool that interests you to be taken to the video overview of it and a PDF overview of it. Write about your chosen tool as your exit ticket. Here is the CER method. See the stems below the images. Alternatively, you can explain your technology choice in Flip. Please post your response to the class Padlet with your full name and the name of your campus.

Big Idea:
What can I do to teach others about my SDG and help my community implement one of the SDGs?

1.png

Students will have three primary goals for this unit.

First, they will be working to research a chosen SDG and consider a scenario-based lesson. Second, they will need to determine how they will educate others in terms of their SDG, for most people know very little about the SDGs. Finally, they will be creating a multimedia presentation and persuasive letter meant to convince people to take action regarding their SDG. Be thinking about these three aspects of the project at all times.

Alternatively, students can

construct an explanation based on evidence for how the availability of natural resources, the occurrence of natural hazards, and changes in climate have influenced human activity OR

evaluate or refine a technological solution that reduces the impacts of human activities on natural systems.

Extension: Enter your multimedia project in the worldof8billion video contest.

Extension: Use the Five Thinking Hats Method when reading: Five Thinking Hats is a simple, effective parallel thinking process that helps people be more productive, focused, and mindfully involved.

You and your team members can learn how to separate thinking into six clear functions and roles. Each thinking role is identified with a colored symbolic “thinking hat.” By mentally wearing and switching “hats,” you can easily focus or redirect thoughts, the conversation, or the meeting.
